Norris, Sherry.
Title: Independent Piano Teacher
Sherry Norris earned a BA in piano after attending Bob Jones University for 2 years and then transferring to and graduating from UNC-W. She also is a Suzuki Certified Teacher in Piano. “Sherry’s Music Studio” is in Castle Hayne near the Cape Fear Community College-North Campus.
As a Castle Hayne native, Sherry began piano lessons at the age of 6, began teaching piano at the age of 16 and has taught piano for over 50 years. She has accompanied chorus while in middle school and high school and spent 22 years as volunteer accompanist for Trask Middle School and Laney High School. In churches, she has played the organ and/or piano since the age of eleven and has served as choir director in various churches. After college, she started her piano studio where she has stressed the importance of daily practice, perseverance in perfecting techniques, and enjoying lessons and performing. The greatest pleasure is hearing from past piano students and knowing that they still enjoy playing. It is a great honor to teach children of previous students.
As a member of Cape Fear Music Teachers Association, NCMTA, MTA, Thursday Morning Music Club, National Federation of Music Clubs and National Guild of Piano Teachers, her students are offered a wide variety of performing opportunities, recitals, and competitions, aside from the recitals of her own studio.
Students are accepted from the age of five through adult. Working with students with Aspergers, Autism and even deafness has been a rewarding experience, teaching Sherry that no matter the situation of the student, the important issue is to work with them on the level at which they are and to hopefully let playing the piano and singing be an “outlet” for students no matter what situation or difficulty they might be facing in life.
